La seconda generazione di Mac Pro è stata lanciata il 19 Dicembre del 2013, con un prezzo di partenza pari a €3.049 che è aumentato a €3.449 negli anni essendo cambiata la configurazione. Nonostante oggi abbia compiuto 5 anni può ancora essere configurato con processore Intel Xeon E5 a 12 core, 64GB di RAM ECC, 1TB di SSD e doppia GPU AMD FirePro D700.
Lo scorso anno, durante una discussione sul Mac Pro con John Gruber e altri report, Craig Federighi ha ammesso che l’attuale generazione di Mac Pro, anche chiamato “cestino” proprio per il suo design, non è in grado di dissipare abbastanza calore e quindi non sarebbe in grado di soddisfare alcuni task:
I think we designed ourselves into a bit of a thermal corner, if you will. We designed a system with the kind of GPUs that at the time we thought we needed, and that we thought we could well serve with a two GPU architecture. That that was the thermal limit we needed, or the thermal capacity we needed. But workloads didn’t materialize to fit that as broadly as we hoped.
Being able to put larger single GPUs required a different system architecture and more thermal capacity than that system was designed to accommodate. So it became fairly difficult to adjust. At the same time, so many of our customers were moving to iMac that we saw a path to address many, many more of those that were finding themselves limited by a Mac Pro through next generation iMac. And really put a lot of our energy behind that.
Fortunatamente, la lunga attesa durata 1,826 giorni dovrebbe portare alla fine di un era e l’inizio di una nuova.
L’anno scorso, durante la stessa riunione, Phil Schiller ha rivelato che l’azienda di Cupertino sta “completamente riprogettando Mac Pro” lavorando a una nuova versione che sarà la migliore che Apple abbia mai creato prima d’ora.
Schiller ha inoltre affermato che il Mac Pro sarà “modulare” e sarà dotato di un nuovo display Thunderbolt:
As part of doing a new Mac Pro — it is, by definition, a modular system — we will be doing a pro display as well. Now you won’t see any of those products this year; we’re in the process of that. We think it’s really important to create something great for our pro customers who want a Mac Pro modular system, and that’ll take longer than this year to do.
Apple ha reiterato i propri piani in un comunicato stampa nel 2017:
In addition to the new iMac Pro, Apple is working on a completely redesigned, next-generation Mac Pro architected for pro customers who need the highest performance, high-throughput system in a modular, upgradeable design, as well as a new high-end pro display.
Insomma, è chiaro che Mac Pro arriverà nel 2019 e che molto probabilmente sarà presentato alla WWDC di Giugno.
